Brand StoryThe Beginning of Single Malt “Kuju”

Our idea of a single malt

The Kuju mountain range towers above the surrounding land, with the town of Kuju spreading gently at its base. Our distillery is nestled in this area, often referred to as the “roof of Kyushu.” Overflowing greenery, pure underground water, and daily life that embraces this majestic nature—these are the foundations of our whisky making. Since our founding in 2021, our whisky has rested in barrels, maturing slowly in the climate of Kuju. This bottle contains our dreams and challenges in founding the distillery, along with deep gratitude to everyone who has supported us.

Our first single malt, “THE FIRST,” our first single malt, was blended with the aim of allowing you to directly experience the unique individuality of Kuju Distillery’s spirits. Bottled at cask strength and blended from carefully selected casks, it features notes of green fruits nearing ripeness and the rich sweetness of malt. This expression conveys the complexity and clarity of Kuju’s whisky, with a core of structure and depth.

Thoughts behind the label

What we wanted to cherish was respect for our predecessors. It should be easy to understand that it is whisky, without being eccentric. By expressing it simply, we wanted to create a label that would be loved for a long time and would not get tired of it. At the same time, we aimed to express “Kuju”. We worked with designers through trial and error, brushing up each part one by one, and continuing to work on balancing it until we completed it. We eliminated all unnecessary parts and made it as simple and easy to understand as possible. We feel that we have created an ideal label that is still memorable.

The future of our single malt

Releasing our first single malt was definitely a big goal for us. But at the same time, it is only the first step in our long journey as a distillery. We quietly face the nature of this land, believing in the power of careful handiwork and the accumulation of time, and work on whisky making every day.

We believe that whisky is not just a luxury item, but an expression that connects the memories and culture of the land and the activities of the people to the future. Going forward, we will continue to walk the never-ending path of craftsmanship, as if asking questions, without forgetting our admiration and gratitude for the culture of Kuju, the history of whisky making, and the predecessors who protected it.We aim to be a presence that allows you to gently feel the breeze and tranquility of this land, transcending time and place, through a glass of whisky.
