これまで「蒸溜所グッズが欲しい」というお声をいただくことも多く「蒸溜所グッズを作りたい」と言いつつ、形にできていませんでしたが、ようやくひとつ販売まで漕ぎ着けました！

でも、単なる「蒸溜所グッズ」なだけでは久住らしくない。もっと意義のある形にしたい。と考えたのが、「アップサイクルプロジェクト」です。

「久住」という地名を蒸溜所名として掲げさせていただいているのは、本来、蒸溜所は「パブリック」な存在である必要があると考えているからです。久住のため、大分のため、地域を盛り上げていくことが大きな使命でもあると考えています。ならば、大分の企業や職人の方々の力を借りて国内外にその魅力を発信していくことが一助となるのではないかと考えました。

そこで、ウイスキー造りの過程で生まれる副産物を使って大分の企業や職人さん、作家さんの力をお借りして新たな命を吹き込んでいただこうというプロジェクトを立ち上げました。

今回、素材として注目したのは、原料の麦芽が入って届く「フレコンバッグ」です。軽くて丈夫な大きな袋で、これまで廃材を入れて廃棄するか産廃として処理するしかありませんでした。

ご協力いただいたのは、大分市でテント屋さんにしてオーダーバッグやオーダースーツ、雑貨のセレクトショップなども展開する、モノづくりを武器に技術とセンスで新しいことに挑戦してきた「佐藤防水店」様です。

テント素材を加工する技術を生かし、帆布でオーダーメイドのバッグを制作していることから佐藤防水店のDNA「帆布」とかけ合わせることで洗練されたデザインに仕上げていただきました。

まずは、「トートバッグ」「ランチバッグ」「キーホルダー」の３アイテムが完成。
コンセプトは「日常的に持ち歩けるオシャレ感と手作りならではのクラフト感の融合」。
素材がタフだからこそ叶う、毎日どこへでもお供できるアイテムに仕上がりました。

「トートバッグ」は、ボトル２本を内ポケットに入れてもA4サイズの資料が入るサイズで、バッグの持ち手を肩から掛けられる長さになっているので使い勝手も抜群！

表には紺色の帆布を使用し、日常的に使用していただきやすいようアップサイクル感を極力感じさせないシックな雰囲気！内側を見るとしっかりフレコンバッグ素材が見えつつ、自立するタフさも両立しました。

「ランチバッグ」は、女性でも使いしやすいサイズ感でいて、多少の汚れも洗い流せるようフレコンバッグ素材を全面に使用。表の底面と取っ手部分のみ帆布を使用したちょっとPOPで可愛らしいバッグに仕上がりました。

内側にはペットボトルホルダーもあるので、ちょっとしたお出かけにも便利。マチもしっかりとってあるので大きめのお弁当でも安心して入れられるサイズです。

フレコンバッグ素材とロゴをあしらったレザー素材の両方を使用した「キーホルダー」は、フレコンバッグのロゴ印字箇所を切り取って使用しているので、お気に入りの柄を見つけるのも楽しみの一つ。

スナップボタン式になっているので、例えば、トートバッグの取っ手につける、なんてことも。
使い方が広がります。

佐藤防水店の皆様に使ってくださる方へのメッセージを伺いました。

「100円で買えるバッグがある中で、こうした手作りの良さと手作りだから出せる味を楽しんでもらいたい。海の向こうから麦芽とともにやってきたフレコンバッグが大分でまたバッグに生まれ変わっている。そんなストーリーも含めて楽しんでもらえたら。」

「とにかくいっぱい使ってほしい。気兼ねなく使うことであたりが出たり、味が出てくるのでガンガン使ってもらいたい。」

実際にプロトタイプを買い取らせていただき、営業用バッグとして使用させていただいたのですが、気兼ねなく使えるものの丈夫なので安心感が違います。資料とサンプルボトルを2本入れて持ち歩いてもへこたれません。内側がフレコン素材になっているので多少の汚れも気にならないのも嬉しい所でした。

何よりバッグを見た方から「かっこいい」「ほしい」と言っていただけることも多く、自慢のバッグになっておりました。

ぜひ皆様にも気兼ねなく日常使いのバッグとしてお使いいただきたいと思っています。
まずは、蒸溜所にて販売を開始いたします。今後、蒸溜所以外での販売も検討中です。

制作いただいたのはテント屋さんでバッグ屋さん！？佐藤防水店様

バッグの制作をお願いしたのは、大分市の「佐藤防水店」様。実は、創業74年のテント屋さん。大型のテントを鉄骨設計から行ったり、トラックの幌やカバー、看板やオーダー鉄骨フレームの制作などを手掛けてきました。 

そのテントやシートの製造で培った技術を活かし、2011年より極厚帆布やシート素材を使用したオーダーメイドバッグの製作・販売を行っています。

使用する生地は、一般的な帆布(キャンバス)のものと違い、アパレル・服飾資材ではなく産業資材を目的に作られたものが中心。国内最厚の2号帆布（27.8オンス!!）を始め 、極厚の帆布生地を総合送りの工業用ミシンで縫い上げる職人技が光るオリジナルバッグを製造しています。

オリジナルバッグのほかセレクトした雑貨を販売する「Re-sew」、オーダースーツを手掛ける「Rike labo」なども展開する、センスと職人によるものづくりを武器に新しいことに挑戦してきた大分でも注目の会社です。

大分のおしゃれな人はみんな持っていると言われる程の人気を誇り、今なお根強いファンが足しげくお店に通っています。

We’ve received many requests for distillery merchandise, and while we’ve always wanted to make distillery merchandise, we’ve never been able to put it into practice. Finally, we’ve finally managed to sell some!

However, simply having “distillery merchandise” doesn’t feel right for Kuju. We wanted to create something more meaningful. That’s how we came up with the “Upcycling Project.”

The reason we named our distillery after the place name “Kuju” is because we believe that a distillery should be a public entity. We believe that a major mission is to invigorate the region, both for Kuju and Oita. Therefore, we thought that we could help by enlisting the help of Oita’s businesses and artisans to promote its appeal both domestically and internationally.

So, we launched a project to use by-products from the whiskey-making process and breathe new life into them with the help of Oita’s businesses, artisans, and artists.

This time, we focused on the “flexi-container bags” that the malt ingredient arrives in. These large, lightweight, and durable bags have traditionally only been used to fill with waste materials or disposed of as industrial waste.

Our partner was Sato Waterproofing, a tent shop in Oita City that also operates a select shop selling custom-made bags, suits, and miscellaneous goods. The company has been challenging itself with new technologies and flair, leveraging its manufacturing expertise to take on new challenges.

Utilizing its tent material processing techniques to create custom-made bags from canvas, Sato Waterproofing combined this with its “canvas” DNA to create sophisticated designs.

To begin with, three items were completed: a tote bag, lunch bag, and key chain.
The concept was “a fusion of a stylish, everyday carry-around feel with the craftsmanship you can only get from something handmade.”
The tough materials make these items perfect for everyday use.

The tote bag is large enough to fit two bottles in the inner pocket and still hold A4-sized documents, and the handles are long enough to be worn over the shoulder, making it extremely convenient!

The exterior is made of navy blue canvas, giving it a chic feel that minimizes the upcycled feel, making it easy to use every day! The interior reveals the flexible container bag material, while remaining durable and able to stand on its own.

The “lunch bag” is sized to be easy for women to use, and is made entirely of flexible container bag material so that minor stains can be washed away. Only the bottom and handles of the exterior are made of canvas, giving it a cute and pop-like look.

It also has a water bottle holder on the inside, making it convenient for short trips. Its ample gusset means it can safely hold even a large lunch box.

The “keychain” is made of both flexible container bag material and leather material with a logo, and is made by cutting out the logo printed on the flexible container bag, so finding your favorite pattern is part of the fun.

It has a snap button closure, so you can attach it to the handle of a tote bag, for example.

The bag can be used in a variety of ways.

We asked the staff at Sato Waterproof Shop for a message for those who will use it.

“While there are bags you can buy for 100 yen, I want people to enjoy the quality and flavor of these handmade bags. The flexible container bags that arrived across the ocean carrying malt are being reborn in Oita as bags. I hope people will enjoy this story as well.”

“I just want people to use them a lot. Using them without any hesitation will help them develop a unique texture and flavor, so I hope people will use them as much as they can.”

We actually purchased a prototype and used it as a sales bag. It’s sturdy yet comfortable, giving us a sense of security. Even carrying documents and two sample bottles inside, it doesn’t get worn out. Another great thing about the flexible container lining is that it doesn’t get dirty easily.

More than anything, people who see the bag often comment, “It’s cool” and “I want one,” and it’s become a bag they’re proud of.

We hope everyone will feel comfortable using it as an everyday bag.

We’ll start selling it at the distillery. We’re considering selling it outside the distillery in the future.

It was made by a tent shop and bag maker!? Sato Waterproofing

We commissioned the production of our bags from Sato Waterproofing in Oita City. This tent shop, founded 74 years ago, has been involved in the design of large tents, truck canopies and covers, signs, and custom steel frames.

Leveraging the expertise cultivated through tent and sheet manufacturing, since 2011, the shop has been producing and selling custom-made bags using extra-thick canvas and sheet materials.

Unlike standard canvas, the fabrics they use are primarily intended for industrial use rather than apparel or clothing. They use Japan’s thickest No. 2 canvas (27.8 oz!!), and sew these extra-thick canvas fabrics with a multi-feed industrial sewing machine to create original bags that showcase their craftsmanship.

In addition to their original bags, the shop also operates “Re-sew,” which sells selected miscellaneous goods, and “Rike labo,” which makes custom suits. Leveraging their sense of style and craftsmanship, Sato Waterproofing is a company gaining attention in Oita, taking on new challenges.

It’s so popular that it’s said that every fashionable person in Oita has one, and even now, its loyal fans continue to frequent the store.

Sato Waterproof Store has come up with various initiatives to promote the charms of Oita.

They cooperated with this project as well, hoping that it would benefit Oita.
