■ Students from Kuju Elementary School came to visit us!
Our president, Utoda, has long dreamed of welcoming local elementary school students for a field trip—and that dream has finally come true! On Thursday, February 12th, we were delighted to host the 5th and 6th graders from Kuju Elementary School for a distillery tour.
The students were divided into two groups: Takeishi, our head of production, led the 5th graders, while President Utoda took charge of the 6th graders. They guided the students through the production building and maturation cellar, explaining the intricate process of how whisky is crafted.
We gave the students a taste of the wort (the sweet liquid extracted from malt) that had been brewed just that morning. Many were surprised by its sweetness, exclaiming, “It’s so sweet!”
The 6th graders also took part in a “10-second challenge” to open the manhole cover of the mash tun. It turned out to be a highlight of the day! Everyone was shocked by how heavy it was, and the air was filled with excitement. We were also deeply impressed—and even inspired—by their sharp, insightful questions, some of which were on par with those of any adult connoisseur.
That same evening, their teacher personally delivered a collection of thank-you messages from the students. Knowing that these local children had always been curious about what goes on inside our walls, it was truly an honor to finally show them around.
We sincerely hope that some of them will grow up to be whisky enthusiasts—or perhaps even join us as distillers one day!
A heartfelt thank you to the 5th and 6th graders of Kuju Elementary School and their teachers for visiting us.
